 | | Posted by: Alex Juschin Account | Monday, May 04, 2009 | I guess many of you have already downloaded the new Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) and it might be that you, just like me, have already installed previous versions of Windows 7 Beta (just go to Start -> Run.. -> winver , to see your build version) - like 7000, 7057 or 7077 or alike downloaded from Technet or MSDN or from Microsoft Connect website. The previous Beta's worked stable so you might have installed a lot of applications on it which you, just like me, don't want to reinstall. However one of the requirments of installation of Release Candidate is:
For client versions, upgrades from Windows 7 Beta are blocked. You should not work around this issue nor report bugs. Valid test scenarios are clean installs and Windows Vista upgrades. Server upgrades from beta to RC are supported. (see details in “Installation” section below) There is a tricck though how to be able to still upgrade your Windows 7 Beta to Release Candidate. During the Installation of the RC the Setup does a check of installed build of Windows 7, with release candidate the build should not be less the 7100. You can change the minimum build manually.To do so locate your downloaded ISO image of either x86 or 64bit:
en_windows_7_ultimate_rc_x64_dvd_347803.iso en_windows_7_ultimate_rc_x86_dvd_349010.iso
Unpack it with Winimage or WinRAR. Extract it to some folder:
Just find the file called "cversion.ini" in x:\EXTRACTED FILES FOLDER\sources\csersion.ini (open it with Notepad): The original file look like: ------------------------------------- [HostBuild] MinClient=7100.0 MinServer=7000.0
------------------------------------- change the
MinClient=7100.0
to something like
MinClient=7000.0
The start the setup.exe and your system will be upgraded just fine, after the upgrade you will get the build number 7100 when you run winver.exe

also when you upgrade to Release candidate your Remote Desktop Client is showing now version 6.7.7100 (where .7100 is the build verion), mstsc.exe:

Windows 2008 R2 Release Candidate DOES support upgrade from a BETA version. Fully supported (so you DONT NEED to apply the above) are Operating Systems - Windows VISTA with SP1 or SP2. After you upgrade you will be asked to type your Windows 7 Key again. If you have lost your previous one (which is still valid) you can easy get one from Microsoft Website here:

For Windows 2008 R2 Release Candidate the key's can be downlaoded from here (or your alternatively from you TechNet, MSDN or Connect site:
