In one of the previous blog entries I described how to install RDP 6.1 on Windows 2003. Now, when RDC version 7 have been released for Windows XP 7:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=72158b4e-b527-45e4-af24-d02938a95683&displaylang=en

Let's see if you we can do the same with RDP 7. When we try to start the installation, the already well known info pop's up:

KB969084 Setup Error: "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."

okay so same like with RDP 6.1. Lets go into the properties of the installation file:

WindowsXP-KB969084-x86-enu.exe

go to the "Compatibility Tab". Checkbox the "Run this program in compatibility mode for, choose "Windows XP". Then click apply. Start the installation again. Now when we run it it tells us:

KB969084 Setup Error: "Setup has detected that the version of the Service Pack installed on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix. At minimum you must have Service Pack 3 installed."

That means that there is no way to run RDP 7 client on Windows 2003 Server SP2 since it just does not have the Windows XP3 compatibility mode.

P.S: Microsoft Application Compatibility Kit 5.5 won't help you either :-(

Well there is no way to do it "clean way". I would not dare to download a customomized executable and put it on my prduction servers.
